Enabling dynamic modelling of coastal flooding by defining storm tide hydrographs

چکیده

Abstract. Coastal flooding is driven by the combination of (high) tide and storm surge, latter being caused strong winds low pressure in tropical extratropical cyclones. The surge astronomical defined as tide. To gain an understanding threat posed coastal to identify areas that are especially at risk, now future, it crucial accurately model inundation. Most models used simulate inundation scale follow a simple planar approach, referred bathtub models. main limitations this type they implicitly assume infinite flood duration, do not capture relevant physical processes. In study we develop method generate hydrographs called HGRAPHER, provide global dataset based on time series surges tides derived from Global Tide Surge Model (GTSM) forced with ERA5 reanalysis wind fields. These represent typical shape extreme certain location along coastline. We test sensitivity HGRAPHER respect two assumptions determine hydrograph, namely event sampling threshold coincidence maxima. hydrograph can be move away modelling techniques towards dynamic across different spatial scales.

Modeling of storm-induced coastal flooding for emergency management

This paper describes a model package that simulates coastal flooding resulting from storm surge and waves generated by tropical cyclones. The package consists of four component models implemented at three levels of nested geographic regions, namely, ocean, coastal, and nearshore. The operation is automated through a preprocessor that prepares the computational grids and input atmospheric condit...

Tropical Cyclone Flooding: Not Just a Coastal Storm-Surge Phenomenon

Inland riverine flooding from tropical cyclones (TCs) is responsible for significant economic losses in the United States. Yet, most hurricane loss assessment efforts are focused on coastal areas. Hurricane Irene, which struck the U.S. east coast in 2011, provides a recent and poignant example: while intense media coverage and preparation and evacuation activities focused on the projected coast...

Storm Hydrographs from Small Urban Catchments

The Rational method was reviewed, and found to be a special case of the kinematic wave solution under a uniform rainfall excess. In this study, a moving average procedure is introduced to the kinematic wave model. The kinematic wave solution is modified from an instantaneous rainfall to an average rainfall over a period of time of concentration. The revised kinematic wave solution provides the ...

Sensitivity Analysis of Water Flooding Optimization by Dynamic Optimization

This study concerns the scope to improve water flooding in heterogeneous reservoirs. We used an existing, in-house developed, optimization program consisting of a reservoir simulator in combination with an adjoint-based optimal control algorithm. In particular we aimed to examine the scope for optimization in a two-dimensional horizontal reservoir containing a single high permeable streak, ...

Coupled wave and surge modelling and implications for coastal flooding

The physical causes of coastal flooding due to marine storms are discussed. We examine the costs and impacts of storm surges and waves with reference to the UK. The mechanisms of interaction between waves and the mean circulation due to tides and wind are reviewed. A case study to illustrate the magnitude of surges, waves and their interactions is presented for Liverpool Bay in the eastern Iris...
